Backgammon Board Setup (Diagram): How to Set Up a Backgammon Board
Setting up a backgammon board takes less than 10 seconds once you know the universal 2 - 5 - 3 - 5 checker setup rule. A standard board features 24 points divided by a central bar, and each player starts with 15 checkers.
1. Step-by-Step Backgammon Setup: The 2 - 5 - 3 - 5 Rule
- 24-Point (Far Corner / Opponent's 1-Point): 2 checkers
- 13-Point (Midpoint / Far Outer Corner): 5 checkers
- 8-Point (Outer Board, 1 Point Past the Bar): 3 checkers
- 6-Point (Home Board Entrance, Next to the Bar): 5 checkers
Your opponent's 15 checkers are placed in a direct vertical mirror image across from yours using the exact same 2 - 5 - 3 - 5 counts.
2. Which Way Do Checkers Move? (Opposite Horseshoe Paths)
Both players move their checkers in opposite U-shaped paths. In the diagram above, White moves counter-clockwise from the top-right corner (24-point) across the top row to the left, turns down into the bottom row, and bears off from the bottom-right home board (points 6–1). Black moves clockwise from the bottom-right corner around the left side into the top-right home board.
3. Left vs. Right Home Board Orientation & Variant Setups
A physical board can be oriented with the home board on either the right or the left, provided your 5-checker stack (6-point) sits immediately next to the bar and your 3-checker stack (8-point) sits one point away from the bar in the outer board.
