Turkish Backgammon Variants & Traditional Rules
In Turkish culture, backgammon (known locally as Tavla) is a cherished social tradition across tea gardens, coffeehouses, and tournaments. Over centuries, distinct regional variants have evolved on the classic 24-point board.
Popular Turkish Backgammon Variants
- Erkek Tavlası (Classic / Modern Tournament): Standard international backgammon featuring two-checker blocks, hitting blots to the bar, Gammon (Mars, 2 pts), and Backgammon (3 pts).
- Kız Tavlası (Girls' Backgammon): A fast, hit-free, block-free pure bearing-off dice race starting inside the home board.
- Asker Tavlası (Soldier's Backgammon): Nostalgic variant where locked checker columns wake up as matching dice numbers are rolled.
- Gülbahar (Gul Bara): Explosive variant where even a single checker blocks a point and rolling doubles chains ascending doubles all the way up to 6-6!
- Mahbus (Plakoto / Pinning): Deep positional variant where landing on a lone opponent checker pins it underneath instead of sending it to the bar.
